Today women are still making progress when it comes to making their dreams of becoming a doctor come true. But even today women are still not as successful as male doctors are. When it comes to school women have made great improvements from back in the 19th century. In the 1930's women made up only about 4 percent of the student population in medical schools. In the 1990's that number had jumped to almost 36 percent. When you look at the bigger picture of women actually getting jobs as doctorws or physicians that is where women are still having the issue with gainin some control (Feminist Majority Foundation).
When you look at women trying to teach in medical schools they only make up about 20 percent. That is not that much of a change from ealier in the 1900's (Feminist Majority Foundation). Therefore women are still struggling to be seen as being able to teach other people about the subject of medicine. Even though women teachers have had just as much schooling and that as the male teachers have. Just because women are women does not mean that they are any less smarted than men.
When you look at numbers dealing with women in the actual work place of being a doctor or physician and actually practicing medicine their numbers comapred to men's numbers are still significantly lower. When it comes to being and actual physician or doctor males still make up about 84 percent of the population. When you look at nurses women make up about 97 percent of that population(Feminist Majority Foundation). Maybe it is because women have always been seen as helpers and nurtures so they get those kinds of jobs more easily because they are either helping the doctor out with someone or making sure that the patient is ok and taken care.
Today women make up almost half of all the people who apply to get into medical each year. Women also now make up at least 25 percent of all physicians. This has greatly changed from even the 1970's(American Academy of Opthalmology). As more and more women get into medical almost the same amount of women come out and go on to become and work as physicians. Women have come very far and they continue to make many more medical breakthroughs each year.
Some say that women have only made a breakthrough because the male doctors needed the help because so many more new disease were discovered each year and many more people got hurt or injured on the job. Some people do still strongly believe in only seeing a male doctor because they seem to think that just because it is a male that they will know more than a women doctor ever could. That is just simply not true. All doctors are put through the same test to get their license and they all go through the same schooling to get it as well.
Some theories are that some people just are not comfortable with a female being their doctor and taken care of them or being in charge of their health. If something bad happens they want the best and for some reason some people just seem to think that males are the best and there is no way that a women could ever good as good of a job as a male could. When in all reality women have the same abilites as men do and go through the exact same trying for crisis situations.
Then you have some people who think the exact oppostie and only want a women doctor. Of course most of the time you only hear when the discussion comes up about going to see the OBGYN or the "girl" doctor. Some women are just more comfortable with a women dealing with their womanly parts. Other times of course some women see it as being wierd to have another woman chekcing out your private parts only because they are simply a woman.
In today's world it all really comes down to preference. If someone wants to see a male doctor because they think that they are some how better than a female doctor then you are going to have to respect that. Some people are just still stuck in their old ways. Most people today do undrestand that just because the doctor is a male that does not mean that he could be better than a female doctor. All doctors are equal, they go through the same trainging and they go through the same exams to get their license and to graduate from medical school.
